Florida became the 27th state of the Union, the government offered 160 acres of land to families willing to move and settles in parts of Central Florida. Windermere Florida was one such area, requirements were simple to cultivate at least 5 acres of farmland and build a cabin, such an attractive offer spawned many to migrate to Windermere Florida, and become citrus farmers.
From past records and the Orlando Sentinel’s accounts (Orlando’s Oldest Paper) show of an English gentleman by the name of Dr. Stanley Scott was one of the many that settled in Windermere Florida. He coined the name for his estate WINDERMERE, but he and many others who took advantage of the free land to grow citrus crops suffered a great loss due to a big freeze. This tragic toll caused many to abandon their dreams of becoming citrus farmers and move away from Windermere Florida.
About 10 years thereafter Windermere Florida suffered this loss, there was a renewed interest when 2 partners by the names of J.C. Palmer and J.H. Johnson purchased Windermere Florida from S.S. Griffin, who had previously purchased the town for a very minimal amount. This new life helped Windermere Florida grow quickly, through the sheer hard work & determination of Mr. Palmer and Mr. Johnson. They established the Windermere Improvement Company, had a schoolhouse built, made many improvements to the town, and even formed Board of Trade in 1912. By 1925 Windermere Florida was an incorporated town.
